'Global Sprint Challenge' expands

The first leg of the 'Global Sprint Challenge' is likely to be an all Australian affair, with no international runners due to line up at Flemington on February 19.

Next year's Global Sprint Challenge now consists of nine Group 1 races across five countries with prizemoney of over $US10 million, after the series expanded to include the 'KrisFlyer sprint' in Singapore.

But the huge money on offer in Dubai is likely to entice both 'J J The Jet Plane' and 'Rocket Man' for either the $2 million Golden Shaheen or the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint, both run on the Dubai World Cup program on March 26, providing a clash with the premiere Australian sprint.

Leigh Jordan, Racing Victoria's international scout, said the big money on offer in Dubai and avoiding Australia's superstar mare 'Black Caviar' on her home turf were reasons cited by connections of both horses to miss the first leg of 'Global Sprint Challenge'.

'Ortensia' draws well in Hong Kong

Australian sprinter 'Ortensia' has drawn well for her international debut in Sunday's Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint.

At Thursday's draw, Tony Noonan's star mare came up with barrier five, with Singapore sprinter 'Rocket Man' drawn directly on her outside in barrier six.

Locally trained two-time winner of the race, Sacred Kingdom, also drew well and will start from gate two.

Ortensia will be the only Australian representative at the meeting, with Craig Williams, who has ridden Ortensia throughout most of her career, in the saddle.

Sha Tin's famous 'International Day' also features the running of the Hong Kong Cup run over 2000m, the Hong Kong Mile (1600m) and the Hong Kong Vase (2400m).

The Vase will feature the Melbourne Cup winner 'Americain', who has drawn barrier nine in the field of 14.

The French-trained, Australian-owned stayer is the highest rated horse in the race with an international rating of 121.

Top jockey in hospital

Lisa Cropp, the champion New Zealand jockey, is in a New Zealand hospital with a fractured skull following a freak accident yesterday.

Cropp was trapped beneath a pony that she was educating for her teenage daughter, when it ran through a fence railing.

It's then believed that the pony landed on top of the Cropp.

Cropp, one of the leading jockeys in New Zealand, holds the national record for the most winners in a season and has ridden 12 in the past fortnight in Australia.

Cropp has recently moved to Australia, basing herself in Melbourne, and has quickly established herself, including riding a treble at Sandown on November 28.

Cropp was due to appeal to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board tomorrow against a careless riding charge incurred at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

The appeal has now been withdrawn.

Japanese plans for 'Al Garhood'

Ciaron Maher will target an invitation to compete against the best steeple chasers in the world with veteran 'Al Garhood' in next April's Nakayama Grand Jump.

He is extremely keen to get to Japan as he fears Al Garhood will be weighted out of the top races next year, after winning the 2010 Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool.

The 11 year old gelding also won the 2010 Von Doussa Steeplechase at Oakbank and has twice won the Brierly Steeplechase on his home track.

"He hasn't done all he can here, but he has probably done what they will allow him to do considering the weight he likely to get now", Maher said.

Al Garhood carried a massive 67kg in the Von Doussa and 66kg in the Grand Annual.

"I'm sure he will get a lot more weight in both those races if we stay home with him next year", Maher said.

Maher is planning to get Al Garhood fit for Japan with three flat runs in Victoria before the Pegasus Jump on April 9 as a lead up to the $1.75 million Grand Jump nine days later.

Al Garhood has raced 66 times for 13 wins and has earned more than $420,000 prizemoney.

'King Pulse' on comeback trail

Exciting young sprinter 'King Pulse' has returned to Mike Moroney's stables, after his Autumn and Spring were destroyed by the storm that lashed Flemington in early March.

After running a brilliant fourth behind 'Wanted' in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, King Pulse slipped on hailstones as he was returning to his stall, broke free, ran through the Flemington horse tunnel, and became wedged between two running rails.

Moroney remains uncertain what impact the scars from the storm will have on the lightly raced gelding.

Veterinarians and Moroney's staff were positive in all of their preliminary reports, but the acid would not be applied until King Pulse reached a trial.

"They say the shoulder injury has healed and just as long as that stays intact when the pressure goes on, but the dropped hip ... well, you just don't know until the pressure goes on", Moroney said.

Moroney will not nominate King Pulse for any race, until he can gauge how far the four year old has progressed.

'Squamosa' stars at Monday trials

Talented colt 'Squamosa' starred in a commanding barrier trial win on Monday, but still remains three weeks away from resuming racing.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse will wait until Boxing Day before starting the Golden Rose place getter's campaign towards the Magic Millions, despite dominating his 1050m heat at Randwick,

"It's not an ideal preparation but he's been in work a while now and he's a very powerful colt", Tulloch Lodge spokesman Mark Webbey said.

Squamosa is expected to resume his campaign against older horses in a 'benchmark 85' race over 1100 metres at Randwick.

Squamosa will then head to the Gold Coast where he is expected to renew acquaintances in the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas with Rick Hore-Lacy's stable star 'Toorak Toff'.

At their only previous clash, Toorak Toff narrowly beat Squamosa in the Group One Golden Rose at Rosehill earlier this year.

While Toorak Toff was basking in his Group 1 glory, it was Squamosa who earned the respect of the racing industry, after working at both ends of the race.

The Magic Millions carnival will be held on January 15.

Caulfield Cup expansion plans

Australia's richest 2400m handicap, the Caulfield Cup, may be increasing in field size beginning next year, in a bid to attract more international competition.

Subject to the approval of stewards, the Melbourne Racing Club will meet to consider increasing the field limit from 18 to 20.

The MRC is confident the Caulfield track can cope with 20 runners starting from the 2400m.

"If you can accommodate them (the 20 horses) you should try to increase the field size", said MRC chairman Mike Symons.

I969 was the last time 20 horses started in the Caulfield Cup, when 'Big Filou' won on protest from 'Nausori'.

In other Caulfield Cup developments planned by the MRC, prizemoney for the Mornington Cup will be doubled to $300,000 and the winner will receive a ballot exemption for the Caulfield Cup.

Racing's next champion?

New Zealand's Windsor Park Stud have successfully bred a full brother to Australian champion 'So You Think' late on Tuesday night.

Michael Moran, The mare's part-owner and marketing manager of Windsor Park, said the colt was very much like his famous brother.

"He's very similar to So You Think", Moran said.

"He's a lovely dark brown colour like So You Think and he has a white spot with a fine white stripe down the middle of his nose".

Costing just $110,000 as a yearling, So You Think raced in Australia 12 times for eight wins including two Cox Plates and winning prize money in excess of $5.6 million.

Irish racing giant Coolmore recently paid between $30-40 million for a half share in So You Think.

So You Think and his brother are both High Chaparral colts out of Triassic.

'Rocket Man' heading Down Under?

International sprint sensation 'Rocket Man' has been targeted by Racing Victoria for the two Australian legs of the Global Sprint Challenge early next year.

Leigh Jordon, Racing Victoria racing operations manager, has sent details of the Group 1 Lightning and Australia Stakes to the trainer of Rocket Man, Patrick Shaw.

Shaw has displayed a willingness to travel Rocket Man, a winner of 10 of his 13 starts.

Rocket Man finished second in the 1200m Golden Shaheen in Dubai in March and he's currently in Hong Kong preparing for the Hong Kong Sprint.

Jordon also mentioned that Hong Kong sprinter 'Little Bridge', a close third behind dead heat winners Rocket Man and 'One World' in the Cathay Pacific Jockey Club Sprint, was another horse of interest.

Little Bridge won his first five starts before finishing a half length second behind Rocket Man and One World.

The Australian legs of the Global Sprint Challenge have failed to attract any serious overseas interest since 'Cape Of Good Hope' won the 2005 Australia Stakes and ran third behind 'Takeover Target' in the 2006 Lightning Stakes.

Autumn Carnvial shake up

The state government and Events New South Wales have joined forces with Sydney's racing bodies to re-brand their autumn carnival.

Sydney Carnival, The Thoroughbred Experience, will take effect in 2011 as one of five signature events on the NSW Events calendar joining, New Year in Sydney, Vivid Sydney, Crave Sydney International Food Festival and the Sydney International Art Series.

With Golden Slipper Day and Derby day being held on consecutive Saturdays with all racing being Group 3 level or above, a stellar racing atmosphere is certainly going to be created.

Racing minister Kevin Greene is certainly excited about the future of racing in NSW.

"What we have achieved for the racing industry in New South Wales in recent times will provide a solid foundation for its future stability and growth".

Greene also said that the Sydney Carnival was about more than just the racing.

"We invest in the Sydney Carnival because it is exactly the kind of event that drives interstate and international visitors to Sydney, it creates jobs, vitality and buzz and enhances Sydney's place as Australia's number one tourism destination".

Queensland Jockey to undergo counseling

In the wake of the Robl and Shinn betting scandal, A Queensland jockey must undergo counseling for a gambling problem after he was suspended for also betting on thoroughbred races.

Lyle Finlay was given a three month suspension and fined $1000 during an inquiry on Monday.

Finlay pleaded guilty to the charges of; making a false statement to a Queensland steward, and placing bets at a 'Beaudesert hotel' TAB facility earlier this month.

Finlay's suspension will end on March 3 but before he is re-issued his jockey's license, he must produce evidence to show he attended a Gamblers Anonymous course.

A Racing Queensland statement said, " ... he would have to produce a certificate to stewards to show that he has attended an accredited Gamblers Anonymous course to indicate that the course was successful and he has overcome his gambling addiction".

Finlay's ban comes as Gold Coast jockey Daniel Griffin prepares to front a betting related inquiry in Brisbane on Thursday.

Sydney jockeys Blake Shinn and Peter Robl were last week given long bans for their part in a betting scandal.

Shamash eyes Group success

Lightly raced gelding 'Shamash' is being set for a tilt at the Group 2 Villiers Stakes, if all goes to plan in the Listed Festival Stakes this Saturday.

Shamash showed talent early on in his career, but injuries took their toll after he ran second as favourite to his debutant stablemate 'So You Think' at Rosehill early last year.

With feet and testosterone issues, Shamash was out of action for 18 months. In that same period of time, So You Think won two Cox Plates and established himself as a champion of the turf.

On the eve of So You Think racking up his fifth Group 1 victory in the Mackinnon Stakes on October 30, Shamash, who had been recently gelded, made a winning return at Canterbury and backed that up with another victory at Rosehill a fortnight later.

"We'll nominate him for the Festival Stakes and see how he works on Tuesday and Thursday", Cummings said.

"If he is to run in the Villiers he would have to run in the Festival.

"He's very well and we'll just see what happens".

The Listed Festival Stakes run over 1500m is at Rosehill, while the Group 2 Villiers Stakes over 1600m is at Randwick on December 18.

No Autumn for 'Shoot Out'

Group One winner 'Shoot Out' has been ruled out of making an appearance in next year's Sydney autumn carnival.

Last Autumn carnival Shoot Out showed his class claiming the Group One AJC Australian Derby and Randwick Guineas in Sydney.

After a good, yet frustrating Melbourne spring campaign the gelding will bypass the autumn in favour of the Brisbane winter.

Trainer John Wallace said he had spoken with Shoot Out's owners Graham and Linda Huddy and decided that a decent spell was the best thing for the horse.

"He'll come into my place in early January and he'll do his racing in the winter here in Queensland", Wallace told Sydney's Sky Sports Radio.

"He won't have a lot of starts and then we'll go to Melbourne again".

Shoot Out's main Queensland targets will be the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast and then the Group 1 Doomben Cup.

The winner of seven of his 19 starts, Shoot Out has accumulated almost two million dollars in prizemoney.

Ortensia stripped of Group One

The owners of 'Ortensia' today appealed against their mare's disqualification from first placing in the Group One Galaxy at Randwick on April 17.

The Racing New South Wales Appeal Panel dismissed the case, and stood by the stewards original decision.

Ortensia was disqualified following the detection of the prohibited substance 'Ractopamine' in a post race urine sample taken from the mare following the running of the The Galaxy.

The Appeal Panel confirmed the order of the stewards acting under AR177 that Ortensia be disqualified from first placing.

'Shellscrape' will now be awarded with the win, pleasing the connections of the winning horse, but not necessarily the punters who may have backed him.

Friday hearing for Shinn and Robl

Scrutinised jockeys Blake Shinn and Peter Robl will appear before stewards on Friday to answer serious charges related to illegal betting activities.

The pair were charged last week after an inquiry into transactions on TAB accounts belonging to Shinn's mother Carol and Robl's wife Elaine.

Elaine Robl, a trackwork rider, has been charged with being a party relating to both jockeys betting, whilst Carol Shinn, a licensed stablehand, has been charged with being a party to just her son Blake.

Under the rules of racing, jockeys are not allowed to bet, because the integrity of the sport comes under scrutiny.

Peter Robl has also been charged with giving false evidence at the first hearing of the inquiry on September 29 when he denied knowledge of Shinn using his wife's betting account.

The inquiry centres on Robl's betting activities between October 9, 2008 and September 29 this year.

In Shinn's case, the focus is on bets placed via his mother's account between October 5, 2008 and September 29, 2010 and bets on Elaine Robl's account between July 17 and September 29 this year.

If found guilty, the jockeys face penalties ranging from suspension to disqualification and/or harsh monetary fines.

Super mare retired

After a lacklustre Melbourne Cup appearance, classy mare 'Profound Beauty' has been retired from racing.

The six year old, trained by Dermot Weld, won nine of her 21 career starts, including three times at Group company and four times at Listed level. She was placed on another seven occasions and ran a very encouraging fifth in the 2008 edition of the Melbourne Cup.

In this year's edition of the 'race that stops a nation' she ran disappointingly, and that has turned out to be her final racecourse appearance.

"She's been retired honourably to stud and she's been a wonderful mare to train", Weld told 'At The Races'.

"If she can breed horses with the courage that she had and they have her will to win, there's going to be some very good horses from her".

Profound Beauty accumulated almost one million dollars in prizemoney from her 21 career starts.

Moonee Valley 20/11

The Spring Carnival may be over, but that doesn't mean money can't be made! Summer racing is normally quite profitable because of the very even fields which provides punters with better value.

Im expecting the Snowden camp to have a very good day all over Australia today, so if you see a Darley runner going around, they're well worth a punt.

If you are following the Group 1 Railway Stakes over in Western Australia, I believe Megatic and Gathering represent the best value in the race.

Happy Punting.

Foxwedge set for big things

Leading jockey Corey Brown was prompted to chase the ride of an unraced two year old, after leaving a big impression on him during a recent barrier trial.

'Foxwedge' makes his first race appearance at Rosehill on Saturday in the 'Always Recycling' Handicap run over 1100m and Brown will gladly be in the saddle.

When the son of Fastnet Rock spaced his rivals by eight lengths in his 900m Rosehill trial on November 9, Nash Rawiller partnered the John O'Shea trained colt.

"I followed it home in the trial the other day and it (Foxwedge) looked ultra impressive", Brown said.

"It's just got to go as good as its trial and I think it will be the winner (on Saturday)".

As soon as Brown realised Foxwedge was going to be making his debut this Saturday, he was on the phone to his manager, knowing Rawiller was in Western Australia for the Group 1 Railway Stakes.

"I haven't had anything to do with him, but looking at him he's a really good looking horse and he trialled like he looked, I rang my manager immediately".

Foxwedge, a $925,000 yearling purchase, has drawn the outside barrier in the field of six, which includes 'Dream Choice' who was runner up to classy filly 'Saramenha' on debut last Saturday.

Nikolic in trouble....again...

Champion jockey Danny Nikolic has once again felt the wrath of the Victorian Stewards comission after an angry outburst at head steward Terry Bailey on Oaks Day.

Nikolic has been charged with conduct 'prejudicial to the image or interests of racing' in that he conducted himself in a manner which was insulting and disrespectful towards members of the stewards panel and in doing so used offensive and disrespectful language.

Nikolic's angry outburst was directed at chief steward Terry Bailey over an alleged modified jockeys' vest found in his possession at Flemington over which he was charged and fined $1000.

In the past 12 months, Nikolic and Bailey have a had a number of heated exchanges and the saga appears to just be beginning.

Earlier this year Victorian stewards investigated a number of his rides dating back to October 2009 and looked into the betting activities of some of his associates. Nikolic was cleared of four serious charges by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) board on June 29, but Bailey and Nikolic still cannot seem to agree.

The latest charge will be heard by the RAD board at a date yet to be fixed.

'So You Think' back for three?

Even an overseas move isn't enough to stop one bookmaker from posting duel Cox Plate winner 'So You Think' as favourite for the 2011 edition.

Betstar released the first market for next year's Cox Plate on Monday, with the colt heading betting at $8 to join 'Kingston Town' as a three time winner of the Weight For Age race.

Irish breeding and racing giant Coolmore secured a major stake in So You Think a day after the colt finished third in the Melbourne Cup behind Americain.

In the wake of his part sale, it was widely speculated that So You Think will not race in Australia again.

Under the terms of the sale, So You Think will be sent to Ireland to be prepared by Coolmore's head trainer Aidan O'Brien before he is eventually retired to stand at stud.

The reason for the champion heading the market is that Betstar's Alan Eskander isn't convinced the switch from Bart Cummings to O'Brien means Australian racegoers have seen the last of the champion.

"Until Coolmore say's he's definitely not racing in Australia, he's still our Cox Plate favourite," Eskander said.

'More Joyous', who was unplaced as second favourite behind So You Think in this year's race, occupies the same line of betting at $11 for 2011.

'Zipping', fresh from his fourth Sandown Classic win, is a $26 chance to go one better than this year's runner-up finish.

More Synthetic tracks for Victoria?

Following the success of the artificial surface at Geelong, several Victorian country race clubs have made submissions to have their courses ripped up and replaced with synthetic tracks.

Rob Hines, Racing Victoria's chief executive, said there were "at least a half a dozen options" for new synthetic tracks across the state.

Hines continued stating that if a new track were to be installed it would need to be near the bulk of the horse population and also be a training centre.

Hines didn't rule out the option of an inside synthetic track similar to the one at Geelong being built at either Flemington or Caulfield, but if one were to be installed in the country, the synthetic track would replace the course proper.

"Depending on where we might put this second track, there may be only five or 10 meetings scheduled on the synthetic a year and it might be home for 10 to 20 transferred meetings as required.

"There are at least half a dozen options where this could go but we want a full size synthetic track".

A proposal for a new synthetic track would be submitted to the Racing Victoria board and infrastructure committee as early as next March.

After a review of the Geelong synthetic track was conducted, it found that the overall performance of the track was "very good" in terms of turnover, field sizes and feedback from the trainers and jockeys.

Betting turnover, which is central to the sport, was 20 per cent higher than on the corresponding turf meetings a year earlier.

"The track provided an even surface, consistency of form and really encouraged punting", Racing Victoria's chief strategy officer Paul Bittar said.

In what shapes as being one of the toughest Oaks in many years, the wet track is sure to play a massive part. Favourites such as 'Sasa' might not relish the softer ground, and as with the Derby, may struggle to get the trip.

'Dizlago' was super impressive two starts back relishing in the wet conditions, and winning with a leg in the air. I'm willing to forget her last start where she got too far back and didn't have the easiest run in transit.

'Brazilan Pulse' is the obvious favourite after her tough win last start, but im afraid that run may have taken to much out of her, any may be vulnerable in the last 200m.

'Kittens' looks like she will relish the extra 500m from her last run, and 'Maraaseem' looks a dead set wet tracker, and will be right in the finish.

Race Two
2.Vintedge - 4.Royal Commands - 3.Aloha - 4.Ky's The Limit

'Vintedge' might have a tough time from barrier 16, but is she gains some cover, she will prove hard to hold out. 'Royal Commands' showed a real turn of foot at her last start, and will prove to be a real danger.

Race Three
13.Irazu - 7.I'm Imposing - 17.Gallant Lady - 5.Miles Above

'I'm Imposing' was ultra impressive in his first Australian run, but I'm willing to risk him coming to Flemington second up. 'Irazu' has been running on extremely well without winning, and the 2800m should suit perfectly. 'Gallant Lady' should run a cheeky race out in front.

Race Four
14. Pagan Princess - 8.Flying Tessie - 13.Jersey Lily - 1.Montana Flyer

A host of chances line up in a typically tough mares race, and hopefully there is some value about 'Pagan Princess'. After running consistently in tough Group races over the winter, she looks to of found a winnable race fresh from a break. 'Flying Tessie' was just beaten at her last start, and won on this day last year.

Race Five
14.Light Express - 6.Trudeau - 11.Season Of Fortune

After winning at this distance last start, 'Spurcific' should again be right in the finish. She is a proven wet track filly, and has run well down 'the straight' previously.[SCRATCHED] The unraced pair of 'Light Express' and 'Season Of Fortune' could suprise.

Race Six
9.Dance Of The Ocean - 3.Alotta Spur - 14.Booklet - 6.Palomares

At her first run since coming to Melbourne, 'Dance Of The Ocean' flew home to grab third behind ultra impressive 'Solar Charged' at Caulfield. The extra 200m should suit perfectly, and she will get the run of the race from barrier 7. 'Alotta Spur' and 'Palomares' look improving types, and will be right in the finish.

Race Seven

Race Eight
10.Hidden Wonder - 12.Tagus - 6.Leica Larrikin - 2.Rock Kingdom

Consistent mare 'Hidden Wonder' has certainly has hit a purple patch. After running fourth in the Epsom Handicap, and winning against her own sex last time out, she looks to be the winner. 'Tagus' has run on well at his last two starts, and will be around the placings.

Race Nine
6.True Persuasion - 16.Uxorious - 11.Kallogg

Frustrating sprinter 'The Handsome One' looked like he was back to his best in a recent trial, and will be one to follow in the future. If he doesn't get cluttered up from barrier 2, the lightly raced gelding will be flashing home late.[SCRATCHED] 'True Persuasion' has the best form lines out of the field, and will be very hard to get past.

Race Ten
4.Amaethon - 5.Launay - 13.Lexcen - 3.Overtake

Another tough race to end another tough day. 'Amaethon' has been nothing but consistent throughout her short career, and looks a safe bet to end on. She was game behind 'Berringama' at Caulfield last start and will take some running down. 'Launay' has been frustrating for punters, but looks to of found a suitable race.

With nine international horses lining up against the best Australia has to offer, including possibly the best horse in the last 20 years, this magnificent field will not disappoint.

After receiving 64mm of rain since midday on Saturday, the Flemington track looks to of improved dramatically, but a wet cup will still be a major possiblilty. This will definitely be a big factor into determining the winner.

I believe this years Caulfield Cup is a great form reference for the Melbourne Cup, and the trifecta from that race will be right in the finish once again.

'Harris Tweed' ran second in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup at his last start and gets 1.5kg from the winner. He is a proven stayer, running third in this years Sydney Cup, and the wet track will only help the son of 'Montjeu'. From barrier 13, Brad Rawiller should give the gelding a perfect ride, and after settling better than midfield, will be hard to run down.

The winner of the Caulfield Cup 'Descarado' rises in weight after his strong win, and was sharpened up in the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday. If the track gets any more rain, he is a certain place runner. Barrier 1 might be the only concern if he doesn't fly the gates, but he will settle in the first half of the field and look the winner at some point during the race.

Saeed Bin Suroor is still seeking his first Melbourne Cup, and I believe he has a great hope in the lightly raced 'Holberg'. His only try at the distance reaped a convincing win, and with arguably the best jockey in the world riding him, he will be in it for a long way. The wet weather might be his only concern.

'Monaco Consul', 'Once Were Wild' and 'Illustrious Blue' are a must in Trifectas and First Fours.

'So You Think' could prove to be the greatest horse in living memory, but I am doubting his ability in a true staying test, and the short odds aren't appealing.

Derby Day 2010

Derby Day 30/10/10

Australia’s best day of racing for the year is always Derby Day, and tomorrow’s star packed card certainly doesn’t disappoint. The only thing that could possibly put a dampener on the celebrations looks to be the weather.

With a deluge expected on Saturday, some of the races might seem more fitted to Ian Thorpe than to a horse, but with the weather being the only concern, Flemington’s fabulous carnival should get underway in style.

Race One
1.Skilled – 6.Kookaburras – 2.Mr. Chard – 4.Ace Acosta

This looks the perfect race for Darley to kick off a big Derby Day, with two top chances in the Carbine Club Stakes. ‘Skilled’ looked a little unfit at his last run, but still battled on to run 2nd in a listed race at Caulfield. He should strip fitter for the run and stepping up to the mile should suit perfectly. ‘Kookaburras’ looks to be an improving type, and should be right in the finish. A very even race to start the day.

Race Two
5.Linton – 9.Purple – 12. Maluckyday – 11.Cedarberg

With almost every horse in the race battling for the last Melbourne Cup spot, I’m sure that this years Lexus Stakes should be as competitive as ever. Lloyd Williams’ young stayer ‘Linton’ should confirm himself as a real Melbourne Cup chance with a win tomorrow. After winning impressively at his last start, and improving every time he steps up in distance, this looks a perfect race. ‘Purple’ has been frustrating for punters, and will again prove so tomorrow. ‘Maluckday’ and ‘Cedarberg’ are stayers on the improve.

Race Three
7.Brazilian Pulse – 4.Kittens – 1.Shamrocker – 3.Dizlago

Lightly raced ‘Brazilian Pulse’ should continue on her way to the VRC Oaks with a win in tomorrow’s Wakeful Stakes. After working forward from her wide draw in the Thousand Guineas, she battled on gamely for close up 3rd. The extra distance and the rain forecasted look to hold no problems for her. ‘Kittens’ is on the improve, and getting to a big track like Flemington should suit her perfectly. ‘Shamrocker’ will be right around the mark.

Race Four
10.Solar Charged – 4.Soul – 1.Star Witness – 2.Pressday

After not handling the Melbourne way of going at her first start, top filly ‘Solar Charged’ bounced back with a dominant win at Caulfield. This race looks much tougher, but the 'Straight Six' should suit her, and she could run the back markers of their legs. ‘Soul’ is as consistent as they come, and will be right around the finish. If they are swooping expect a big race from both ‘Star Witness’ and ‘Pressday’.

Race Five
1.Shocking – 6.So You Think – 4.Ginga Dude – 8.Shoot Out

In the final Melbourne Cup warm up, I’m expecting a big race from ‘Shocking’ who should confirm his Melbourne Cup favouritism. He may not be winning the race, but a first three finish is a certainty. Duel Cox Plate winner and superstar ‘So You Think’ is an obvious favourite, and will be the one to beat again. ‘Ginga Dude’ should relish the soft conditions, and may lead easily, I expect a cheeky race. Watch for ‘Shoot Out’ and ‘C’est Le Guerre’ to be storming home late.

Race Six
4.Smokin’ Joey – 1.Retrieve – 3.Lion Tamer – 9.Digital Fortress

I may say this a lot but; if you forget ‘Smokin’ Joey’ went around last start, he would definitely be challenging for favouritism in the Derby. After swallowing his tongue at Moonee Valley, the young stayer never had a chance, and I'll look for a huge improvement in tomorrow’s big race. The extra distance should hold no problems for the colt, and the wet ground may play into his favour.

On paper the Derby looks to be a two horse race, but I think the 2500m may test a few of the favourites, especially in the expected wet conditions. ‘Retrieve’ may be having his eighth start this preparation but you cannot fault his form. His breeding says he’ll get the distance so I expect him to be in the finish. ‘Lion Tamer’ will definitely relish the wet and the extra ground and should fill a first four position.

Race Seven
2.Typhoon Tracy – 12.Yosei – 7.Katie Lee – 6.Sacred Choice

By this time in the day, the wet weather should have well and truly settled in, but that won’t dampen Australia’s best middle distance mare’s hopes. ‘Typhoon Tracy’ has been running well in elite Weight For Age company, and after originally targeting the Cox Plate, the Group 1 Myer Classic appeared a much easier and better option. She won this race easily last year in similar circumstances, and I expect much of the same this time around. ‘Yosei’ seems the logical threat in the race, carrying only 49.5 kg, and the duel Group 1 winner will be strong to the line.

Race Eight
6.Shellscrape – 3.Catapulted – 5.Swift Alliance – 8.Set For Fame

In a typically tough straight race, consistent Group 1 performer ‘Shellscrape’ gets the nod ahead of five or six other top chances. After resuming well behind super mare ‘Hot Danish’ first up, the 1200m at Flemington with the expected rain looks to fit him perfectly. Consistent sprinter ‘Catapulted’ doesn’t have ‘Hay List’ to contend with here and should again be in the finish. Expect a big race fresh from ‘Swift Alliance’.

Race Nine
10. Demerit – 2. Albert The Fat – 1.Dao Dao– 6.Poor Judge

Lightly raced ‘Demerit’ should provide book end wins for Darley on what looks a tough race to end the day. After looking defeated a long way from home first up, Demerit flashed home to grab 4th, and should now be ready to win. Group 1 winner ‘Albert The Fat’ has never missed a place second up, and forget he went around first up after pulling up sore. ‘Dao Dao’ looks to have a slight class edge, but if the track is getting really Heavy by the end of the day, he may be a risk.

Best Bet:
Race 1 No 1 Skilled

Best Roughie: Race 4 No 10 Solar Charged, Race 5 No 1 Shocking

'Playwright' looks to bounce back

Former Australian Guineas placegetter ‘Playwright’ looks to add to his country cups collection today in the Listed Bendigo Cup.

After impressively winning the Benalla Cup two starts back, Playwright failed at his last outing on a heavy track in the Group 3 David Jones Cup at Caulfield.

Trainer Stephen Richards expects Playwright to bounce back today, where he carries the same weight today as in his Benalla Cup win.

“We came back with a plan to run in him in the country cups this time around and he's worked his way up nicely”, Richards said.

“His only blemish this time around was that run at Caulfield. Back on a better track and drawn a good gate he's going to look the winner at some stage”.

Playwright has drawn barrier 1 in today’s feature, and will look to take the lead early, as he has done in his recent racing and has been most effective.

The 2200m should hold no problems for the gelding; however at his last run at the distance, he was a nine length 5th to ‘Growl’ in the Group 3 Hobart Cup.

Playwright is currently an $11 chance for the Cup, with Mick Kent’s galloper ‘My Bentley’ heading the market at $3.80.

Myer Classic suits Palacio

Talented but frustrating mare ‘Palacio De Cristal’ has her best chance at securing her maiden Group 1 victory in the Myer Classic for fillies and mares on Derby Day.

The five year old has had five attempts in Group 1 company with her best result a 3rd in the Coolmore Classic won by ‘Alverta’ at Rosehill in April.

Trainer Graham Begg is looking forward to heading back to Flemington, where she has won impressively before.

"She loves the big stretches at Flemington, she's two for two there", Begg said.

The race has been in Begg's sights all preparation and he is sure she will run exceedingly well.

"She just needs to get into the right race and get the breaks going her way".

Dwayne Dunn will be aboard in the Myer and is unbeaten on the fast-finishing mare having only partnered her in her two Flemington appearances.

With hot rivals such as ‘Typhoon Tracy’ and ‘Hot Danish’ in the race, it is far from a formality, but it certainly wouldn’t surprise to see her right in the finish.

Begg said there was also a good chance Palacio De Cristal would back up a week later in the Emirates Stakes over the same course and distance.

'Hay List' eyes Patinack and Caviar

Superstar sprinter ‘Hay List’ has his campaign back on track, dismissing any doubts about his fitness with a scorching jump out win at Flemington today.

Trainer John McNair brought Hay List from his training base near Geelong for the 800m jump out down the straight at Flemington, and was impressed as well as relieved.

It was Hay List's first serious track test since last week's virus scare that forced McNair to bypass a start in last Saturday's Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley won by ‘Black Caviar’.

Despite winning today's jump out in a fast time, McNair said he will not be tempted to start the former Perth sprinter in Saturday's Group 2 Salinger Stakes at Flemington.

The Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic on the last day of the carnival will instead be the gelding's finale, where a much awaited clash with boom sprinter 'Black Caviar' awaits.

Cox Plate 2010

Cox Plate 2010

It shapes as the battle between the king and queen of racing, both on and off the track. This years edition of the Cox Plate pits Bart Cummings superstar ‘So You Think’, up against the best mare in Australia ‘More Joyous’ trained by the enigmatic Gai Waterhouse.

It’s hard not to get caught up in the hype surrounding these two horses, and I'm sure the race tomorrow won’t disappoint.

Race One:
7.By The Hour – 8.Chi Chi – 6.Mirror Man – 1.Aashiq

Two year old races are always ridiculously difficult to predict this early in the season, and tomorrow’s Inglis Banner is no exception. With no real trial form surrounding a few of these runners I’ve gone with a trusted two year old trainer in Clarry Conners, who trains ‘By The Hour’. The son of ‘Strada’ has trialled well twice in Sydney and should be very competitive.

Race Two:
1.Ambers Waltz – 6.Attributes – 4.Follonica – 3.Zubbaya

After disappointing in her debut Melbourne run in the Edward Manifold two starts ago, ‘Ambers Waltz’ ran out of her skin to run fourth in the Thousand Guineas. She drops back dramatically in grade here and even though carries a bit of weight, is the by far the classiest horse in the race. ‘Attributes’ could be the surprise packet, after winning in Ballarat at her last start, and she certainly looks like a city galloper.

Race Three:
6.That’s Not It – 2.Lone Rock – 5.Multahem – 9.Blink

The good training form of Matt Ellerton and Simon Zahra should continue with developing galloper ‘That’s Not It’. After winning a competitive maiden convincingly two starts back, he ran a super race when off the speed in a leader controlled race at Caulfield. ‘Lone Rock’ has won at the track two starts back and it will pay to forget his last start when he pulled up with an atrial fibrillation.

Race Four:
5. Poor Judge – 4.La Rocket – 1.Rock Kingdom – 12.Firebolt

In one of the most competitive events of the day, 13 evenly rated horses run in the Group 2 Crystal Mile. ‘Poor Judge’ ran an excellent race in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap two weeks ago, and after working hard near the speed he managed to hold on for third behind ‘More Joyous’. I’m expecting only improvement from this consistent galloper, and should be in the finish. La Rocket also ran a cheeky race in the Toorak, and gets back to his favourite track.

Race Five:
6.Black Caviar – 5.Melito – 1.Eagle Falls - 3.True Persuasion

With the withdrawal of top liner ‘Hay List’, the Schweppes Stakes has lost some of its shimmer, however a battle of the Group 1 mares is sure to excite. ‘Black Caviar’ rates alongside Hay List in the upper echelon of Australian sprinters, and should confirm her status tomorrow. From Barrier 2 she should sit just behind the speed, and prove to be to strong for another Group 1 winner in ‘Melito’. ‘Eagle Falls’ should improve 2nd up and loves the track.

Race Six:
4.Smokin’ Joey – 1.Hollowlea – 3.Shadows In The Sun – 5.Bullbars

In what was a slowly run Caulfield Guineas, ‘Smokin’ Joey’ looked to be one of the few horses to be making ground. The extra distance should be a big plus for the colt, with the only worry being a repeat of the slow tempo. ‘Hollowlea’ won at this track two starts back, and forget he went around in the Guineas. ‘Shadows In The Sun’ jumps in class but could be a big improver.

Race Seven:
2.Precedence – 6.Master O’Reilly – 12.My Bentley – 5.Above Average

To keep the Melbourne Cup dream alive, ‘Precedence’ will have to win tomorrow’s staying test in authoritative fashion. I expect this to be the case after winning the JRA Cup and running a close third behind ‘Linton’ at Caulfield. ‘Master O’Reilly’ hasn’t won for an eon, but this looks his easiest race for a while, and is thrown in at the weights, expect improvement. ‘My Bentley’ looks an improving stayer.

Race Eight:
1.Zipping – 5.So You Think – 6.Shoot Out – 7.Trusting

This looks to be the champion making race for Bart Cummings ‘So You Think’. However, if there is a chink in the armour, the one horse to expose this weakness looks to be the Iron horse ‘Zipping’.

Going around in his fourth Cox Plate, Zipping looks to of only improved with age and could go two better than his 3rd last year. After winning the Australian Cup and the Turnbull Stakes at his last two Weight For Age 2000m runs, I expect Nick Hall to make this into a true staying test, and break So You Think’s Heart.

I’m happy to be wrong and watch Bart’s horse become a champion, but stranger things certainly have happened in racing.

Race Nine:
6.Belscenica – 1.Katie Lee – 4.Ghostmilk – 2.Lady Lynette

The last race on the card also proves to be the toughest for the with a high class Group 3 mares. ‘Katie Lee’ has won numerous Group 1 races in New Zealand and should be too classy; however I’m not willing to take a risk on unexposed form. ‘Belscenica’ looks an excellent each way option getting back to her favoured track and distance, and forget she went around last start. ‘Ghostmilk’ and ‘Lady Lynette’ are always right in the finish in these races.

Best Bet: Race 7 No.2 Precedence

Best Roughie: Race 9 No.6 Belscenica, Race 8 No.1 Zipping

Melbourne via Geelong for 'Drunken Sailor'

English-based trainer Luca Cumani will saddle up improving five year old ‘Drunken Sailor’ in tomorrow's 2010 edition of the Geelong Cup.

Cumani, who trained ‘Bauer’ to win the Geelong Cup in 2008, appears confident with the ‘Tendulkar’ gelding, who is coming off a strong win in a listed 2800m race in England and boasts two wins at the Geelong Cup trip.

Drunken Sailor was given a more searching gallop than normal this morning in a bid to make up for lost time after the horse suffered a minor hoof injury last week.

"This has obviously been an interrupted preparation", said Cumani's wife, Sara.

"We wouldn't normally give them a gallop this close to a race, but we've had to do that because of the circumstances, but he seems to be fine now".

Currently a $34 chance in the Melbourne Cup, Drunken Sailor must win the Geelong Cup and earn a penalty to ensure a start, given he is currently 33rd in the order of entry. Hong Kong-based Australian jockey Brett Prebble will take the ride.

Prebble last flew down in similar circumstances to partner ‘Crystal Lily’ in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, and went on to win that race in convincing style, a strong pointer to his chances in this race.

The Geelong Cup is one of the few remaining opportunities for horses to try and push their way into the Melbourne Cup on November 2, which recently has been used by overseas runners as an important Cup trial.

'Moudre' currently heads the market at $4.20 with second favourite 'Mr Charlie' at $7.00. Drunken Sailor is currently an $8.50 chance.

Caulfield Cup 2010 Preview

Caulfield Cup 2010

With the rain tumbling down all around Melbourne, and the track deteriorating rapidly, the 2010 Caulfield Cup meeting seems in terrible danger.

The landscape of the main race has changed complexion dramatically in the last 6 days, and in the next 24 hours, I expect it to take many more twists and turns.

Race One:

1.Enzed Girl - 9.Follonica - 3.Koala Bear

Consistent galloper ‘Enzed Girl’ looks an each way special in tomorrow's opening race. Getting back onto the softer ground is certainly the biggest plus, and after jumping from barrier 1,she should control the race. Expect big improvement from ‘Canconi’ after striking trouble last start.

Race Two:

1.Skilled – 4.Multahem – 2.Territory – 8.Toolbag

‘Skilled’ is certainly the class horse of the field, he is a Group 1 winner and also ran on well behind Guineas winner ‘Anacheeva’ last start. Even if the wet track poses a concern,he should be to good for these. The David Hayes trained ‘Multahem’ could be the wildcard in the race, I was impressed with its debut win, and will only get better with racing.

Race Three:
8.Our Pride And Joy – 3.Speed Of Dark – 2.Zutara – 4.Dizlago

‘Our Pride And Joy’ gets the nod in what is shaping as one of the most difficult races of the day. Arguably should of beaten Derby bound ‘Pitt Street’ last start, and has a liking to wet tracks, as shown by its length second to Snowden galloper ‘Censor’. You could throw a blanket over the next five or six, but ‘Speed Of Dark’ and ‘Zutara’ look the biggest threats.

Race Four:
1.Retrieve – 4.Mackadoo – 2.Yulalona – 10.Ulundi

Although a shade disappointing in the Spring Champion (where he ran 2nd), ‘Retrieve’ looks to cement his Derby favouritism in the Norman Robinson. After jumping from barrier 1, he should get a nice sit in behind the leaders and prove to strong. New Zealand colt ‘Mackadoo’ is certainly his biggest danger. After winning at this course two starts back in impressive style, he again ran well for sixth in a race in which you could forgive most runs.

Race Five:
4.Soul – 8.General Truce – 6.Definitely Ready – 7.Dubleanny

Lightly raced Darley sprinter ‘Soul’ looks the one to beat in the main sprint race on the card. After running second behind ‘Toorak Toff’ at his first run this preparation, Soul strolled in to win the Danehill Stakes at Flemington a month ago. ‘General Truce’ who also came out of the Danehill, ran third behind super mare ‘Black Caviar’ last week, and the week back up may be his only downside.

Race Six:
4.McClintock – 12.Rothera – 2.All Silent

Looks a perfect race for the internationally travelled ‘Dao Dao’, who second up from a spell steps up to his favourite distance of 1400m. Last time at Caulfield he ran a game second to ‘Typhoon Tracy’ in a Group 1 event, and from barrier 2, should get a perfect sit behind the speed.(SCRATCHED) 'McClintock' ran really well in Melbourne last spring and has warmed up well with three solid runs in Sydney.

Race Seven:
5.Rainbow Styling – 10.Zoomin – 8.Purple – 1.C’est La Guerre

Underrated galloper ‘Rainbow Styling’ should continue his excellent vein of form tomorrow, and add to his growing resume. After winning the Naturalism two starts back, he was outstanding in running second behind 'Precedence' in the JRA cup, and the 2000m seems to be his best distance. In what seems a hot race, the wet track might separate the others, with the best in the wet probably being consistent gelding ‘Zoomin’.

Race Eight:
9.Monaco Consul – 1.Shocking – 15.Descarado – 7.Manighar

Even with the weather putting a dark cloud over the Caulfield Cup, it still looks a race for the ages. All 18 horses have a chance at claiming the coveted Group 1 race, but I believe the four I have nominated have the best chances.

Last years VRC Derby winner ‘Monaco Consul’ may have turned in a shocker last start, but if you ignore that race, his two previous runs were definitely encouraging. I believe he is hitting his straps at the right time, and the heavy ground can only be a bonus for the entire.

‘Shocking’ and ‘Descarado’ should both be around the mark, relishing the wet ground and the 2400m, which will seem like 2800m this late in the day. The best of the imports looks to be ‘Manighar’ and it wouldn’t surprise to see him slashing home late to grab a place. Other chances to ‘Harris Tweed’ and ‘Herculian Prince’.

Race Nine:
3.Culminate – 14.Aloha – 8. I’m A Hussy – 6.Montana Flyer

Classy mare ‘Hot Danish’ despises the wet, and will most probably avoid this race at all costs. ‘Culminate’ resumed from a spell with an average run at Flemington first up, but will take significant improvement into this race. She will appreciate the softer ground, and on her best will definitely take some beating. ‘Aloha’ definitely looks an improving horse, and could be the wild card, ahead of a group of 6-7 others. A typical tough mares race.

Race 10:
12.Misty Blue – 10.Little Gem – 20 Varenna Miss
Apart from the cup, this looks to be the toughest race on the card. Every horse has a winning chance, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a roughie thrown up into the mix. ‘Misty Blue’ is a lightly raced mare, coming back from an eight month break. Looked classy in her first preparation, and wouldn’t be surprised to see her winning some black type in the near future. Throw the field into the quaddie, because this race does look impossible!

Mic Mac paddy whack

The Spring campaign of star galloper ‘Mic Mac’ gets underway on Saturday, where he takes on exciting mare ‘Black Caviar’ in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield.

Unbeaten Black Caviar hasn't raced since her dominant win in the Group Two Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in January, and Mic Mac will be looking for any chink in the mare’s armour.

After receiving the son of ‘Statue of Liberty’ during the autumn, Trainer Paul Messara is expecting big things of the entire, but is wary of Black Caviar, "I think if she turns up then she's the one to beat".

Messara said he had learned a bit about Mic Mac in recent weeks to the point where he delayed his spring kick-off by a week.

"He actually takes a bit more work than I first would have thought," the trainer said.

"It just took a bit longer hence a slightly later start to his campaign. But he's ready to go now and I'm very happy with him, let's hope he races back to his best again this preparation".

Messara has given the star sprinter two trials to prepare him for Saturday’s hit out, with his most recent effort a narrow win over 900m last week, finishing just in front of Group 1 winner ‘Melito’.

"I think he'll still take improvement out of the run on Saturday but I'm pleased with the way he's going into it and he's nice and fresh".

Mic Mac is currently $8.00 for the Schillaci and sits on the fourth line of betting. Black Caviar is the dominant $1.70 favourite.

2010 Yalumba Stakes

An intriguing battle is looming in Saturday's Yalumba Stakes, even with only six horses accepting for the Group 1 race.

The $400,000 Yalumba Stakes run over 2000m, pits crowd favourite 'Whobegotyou' against last years Cox Plate winner 'So You Think' in a race that promises to decide who will start favourite in the 2010 edition of the Cox Plate.

When the pair last met, Whobegotyou finished a half length behind So You Think in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes run over 1400m at Caulfield, in what seemed to be a preview of future bouts.

Both horses appear to have a stranglehold over the race, with last years Melbourne Cup favourite 'Alcopop' heading the other runners.

So You Think heads the Yalumba market at $1.50 with Whobegotyou on the second line of betting at $2.90.

Not so Joyous in Toorak

Gai Waterhouse’s glamour mare ‘More Joyous’ will have to defy history on Saturday if she is to continue her winning ways in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

A winner of nine of her twelve career starts, More Joyous races in Melbourne for the first time on Saturday, a task that has brought many other class gallopers undone.

Whilst her ability to handle the configuration of the Caulfield circuit is still unproven, More Joyous has shown herself to be extremely adaptable and capable in all track conditions.

The main stumbling block for More Joyous appears to be shouldering the top-weight of 58kg. In doing so, she is seeking to set a new weight carrying record for mares in the Toorak Handicap, a mark that is currently held by 'Ripa', who carried 57.5kg to success in 1965.

Even with the big weight, Tulloch Lodge spokesman Mark Webbey says the Waterhouse team are still confident and “There's no denying she deserves that figure (58kg)".

More Joyous faces fourteen rivals in the Toorak Handicap and has drawn a little awkwardly in barrier ten, however regains the services of top jockey Nash Rawiller. Rawiller will be back in the saddle on Saturday after Corey Brown rode her to victory at her past two starts in the Sebring Sprint and George Main Stakes.

With classy opposition such as Sir Rupert Clarke stakes winner ‘Response’ and Mick Price’s boom galloper ‘Spacecraft’ carrying less weight than the super mare, More Joyous’ task looks to be insurmountable.

The weight of history on her slight frame may just end up being the undoing of Waterhouse's glamour mare, but no doubt, her Cox Plate campaign will continue steamrolling ahead.

More Joyous heads the Toorak Handicap market at $2.25, with Spacecraft second favourite at $6.50.

'Rothesay' back and raring to go

Boom galloper ‘Rothesay’ looks set for a superb spring campaign, after trialling exceptionally on Tuesday at Rosehill.

After winning the trial, Rothesay's trainer Gerald Ryan said he expceted big things of the four year old, and is looking forward to Saturday week’s Theo Marks stakes, the entires first up assignment.

Rothesay displayed his enormous talent during the Brisbane winter carnival with a two and a quarter length win in the Group 3 Lord Mayor's Cup run over 1600m. This impressive showing was followed by a similar comfortable victory by three and a quarter lengths to win in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas over the same distance.

Ryan believes that his youngster is bigger and stronger than what he's been at this stage of any of his previous preparations, and looks ready for a forward showing first up.

"I sat down last week and watched the replays of his two wins in Queensland and he was impressive doing that,”

“In saying that, I still think he can improve.”

Rothesay is scheduled to progress to the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick second-up and then the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield, meaning a start in the Epsom Handicap is unlikely for the four-year-old.

Rothesay has won four of his seven starts and earned almost four hundred thousand dollars in prizemoney.

'Snow Alert' facing biggest test

Classy five year old ‘Snow Alert’ will test his staying ability on Saturday, stepping up beyond 1600 metres for the first time in the Premier’s Cup at Rosehill.

Snow Alert is one of two runners for leading trainer Chris Waller in Saturday's Listed race over 1800 metres, with Waller’s proven stayer ‘The Embassy’ also in contention.

After running second in the Scone Cup and winning the Listed Rowley Mile in May, Snow Alert was spelled, and his two starts since have been on rain-affected tracks.

Waller has since been searching for the gelding’s preferred firmer going, and seems to be quietly confident heading into Saturday’s race.

"He is fitter for his two runs and is well weighted with 54-1/2 kilos so I expect him to go well".

Waller had always thought that he looked like the type of horse who will get over further ground, with his action suggesting he is suited to longer racing.

"He's a big-striding horse who gets back and with some luck he'll run home strongly”.

Waller has planned out the start of the spring for the gelding, rising in distance to tackle both the Wyong and Newcastle cups.

This race should prove to be a successful start in Snow Alert's new chapter of life. With class on his side, he will definitely be right in the finish in Saturday's race, and in future staying events on the Sydney calender.

Snow Alert is the $5 second elect for the Premier's Cup behind 'Scouting Wide' at $3.20 with The Embassy a $13 chance.

Gamble Responsibly

Victoria's three racing codes have come together in support of the fifth annual Responsible Gambling Awareness Week which runs from 17 to 23 May.

Racing Victoria Limited, Harness Racing Victoria and Greyhound Racing Victoria will assist the State Government initiative to promote the need for a balanced approach to gambling.

Throughout the week, all three codes will feature advertisements in race books, on big screens at race meetings and on industry websites.

The week deliberately focuses on responsible gambling, not problem gambling, and aims to ensure people understand the importance of keeping their gambling under control.

Racing Victoria Chief Executive Rob Hines was at the launch of the week at Flemington on Saturday.

“Having a punt on the races is a great Australian tradition, but it is important to stay in control of your wagering and not let it take over your life”, Mr Hines said.

If your gambling is causing issues in your life, you can take steps to change this. Talking about gambling with somebody you trust can reduce the stress that can cause you to continue to gamble. If you have an issue with gambling there is free, confidential professional help and support available.

For immediate help you can call 1800 858 858 now. There will be someone to answer your call. Or, visit Gambling Help Online at www.gamblinghelponline.org.au for live counselling, email support and self-help tools.

Kavanagh's star heads Stradbroke weights

Mark Kavanagh's 'Whobegotoyou' is set to carry the top weight in this year's million dollar Stradbroke Handicap following yesterday's release of the weights.

Sydney trained 'Danleigh', who ran second in the Group one race last year, was set to carry the top weight of 57.5kg, but is now out in the paddock after his glorious Sydney autumn campaign.

With Danleigh out of contention, the weights will be re assessed, with the Queensland owned Whobegotyou set to head the field after being allocated 57kg.

Whobegotyou is coming off a lengthy break after last spring winning the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes at weight for age over 2000m, before finishing unplaced in the Cox Plate. After maturing over the summer, he may attempt a first-up win in the Stradbroke (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12.

Last year's Stradbroke winner Black Piranha (55.5kg) goes up two kilograms from his winning weight of 53.5kg, whilst Ortensia (53.5kg), after being placed third as a three-year-old filly last year, also rises two kilograms.

Ortensia has been a frustrating horse to follow since last years Queensland campaign, winning the Group 1 AJC Galaxy at Randwick impressively, before only managing a fifth placing under weight for age conditions in last Saturday's BTC Cup at Doomben.

The winner of last weeks BTC Cup 'Albert the Fat' has been given 52kg for the Stradbroke and the Group 2 Victory Stakes winner 'Ghetto Blaster' 51.5kg.

The 2009 Magic Millions and Golden Slipper winner 'Phelan Ready' has 52.5kg and is among an impressive list of three year olds set to play a big hand in this year's Stradbroke.

The group includes Melito (51.5kg), Shellscrape (50.5kg), Set for Fame (49.5kg), Graceful Anna (49.5kg) and Latin News (50kg).

Disaster warning for Randwick

Royal Randwick will be declared a disaster zone on Saturday, after ‘Typhoon Tracy’ makes a mess of the Group 1 Doncaster Mile field.

The super mare is shooting for her fifth straight Group 1 victory, and even after drawing a relatively bad barrier, confidence in the camp is still extremely high.

Trainer Peter Moody was delighted with the wide draw, and believes the mare is better suited in this situation.

"If she'd drawn in, she'd probably have to boot up to hold a position, but from there she can just glide across," he said.

"If anything, a wide barrier gives me a touch more confidence".

After avoiding the Coolmoore classic with the mare because of concerns about the heavy weight she would carry, the Doncaster weighting system seemed to please Moody, after initial scares.

"Originally I thought she was badly weighted in comparison to some of the three-year-olds such as More Joyous, but she isn't running."

If the Typhoon does hit Randwick as expected on Saturday, Tracy might just have cemented her title as ‘Horse of the Year’, and those comparisons with the immortal ‘Sunline’ may be justified.

Typhoon Tracy is currently the $2.90 favourite for Saturday’s Doncaster Mile.

Galactic mission for 'Ortensia'

Tony Noonan’s stable star ‘Ortensia’ looks to begin her ambitious Winter campaign stylishly, when she resumes in the Group 1 Galaxy at Randwick on Saturday.

Ortensia will be having her first start since an indifferent Spring, which concluded with her win in the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot last November.

Noonan has mapped out an elaborate campaign for Ortensia starting with Saturday's Galaxy in Sydney, before heading to Queensland for a further four Group 1 races.

Queensland was a happy hunting ground for the mare last winter, winning the Group 2 QTC cup at Eagle Farm, and also finishing third to 'Black Piranha' in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.

Noonan is pleased with Ortensia’s work heading into the race, and believes the break has been worthwhile.

"She's been in work for three to four months and has had an ideal preparation," he said.

The four year old tuned up for her return with an impressive three length win over ‘Delago Bolt’ and ‘Stryker’ in an 800-metre barrier trial at Warwick Farm.

"Craig (Williams) flew up from Melbourne to ride her and has been glowing in his reports on her since the day he first rode her," Noonan said.

"He was pretty excited after she won the trial”.

Ortensia is currently the $4 favourite for Saturday’s event.

'Fusakeo' seeking perfection

Gai Waterhouse trained 'Fusakeo' should keep his perfect first up record intact tomorrow, as he steps out in the Hyland race colours Handicap at Canterbury.

The developing son of 'Fusaichi Pegasus' showed he races best when fresh last preperation, winning by three lengths in impressive style at Warwick Farm. After disappointing at his next two starts, Waterhouse felt it best to spell the gelding in readiness for the Autumn.

The four year old looks set for an enormous preperation after trialling well behind talented mare 'Olonana' at Randwick a fortnight ago.

Waterhouse is thrilled with the develoment of her gelding and expects a bold showing in tomorrow's race.

"Fusakeo has come up brilliant this preparation, really focused in his work. He is unbeaten fresh up and has never missed a place over 1200m".

Jockey Nash Rawiller takes the ride, and will look get into some good form before Saturday's big ride on Doncaster second favourite 'Rangirangdoo'.

Fusakeo is currently rated as a $2.30 favourite for the race.

'Shoot Out' goes bang!

'Shoot Out' answered critics who questioned his ability to stay 2400m, producing a dominant display to win the Group 1 AJC Derby on Saturday.

After settling near the rear of the field, Shoot Out surged through the field over the last 400m, running away from Gai Waterhouse's former New Zealand gelding 'Descarado'.

Victorian Derby winner 'Monaco Consul' was left in third place, with favourite for the race 'Zabrasive' having his chance but only battling in the straight, finishing fourth.

Trainer John Wallace was convinced Shoot Out would stay the distance, and now the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups would be his priorities in the spring.

“This is my best horse. Some great horses and good trainers have won this race so I feel pretty humble”.

Jockey Stathi Katsidis bounced back a week after Golden Slipper favourite 'Military Rose' disappointed on the main stage, producing a text book ride.

Katsidis believes Shoot Out has the potential for more Group 1 glory, and is definitely looking forward to a Melbourne Spring campaign.

"He could be a champion," Katsidis said.

"I know it's a word that's thrown around a bit but he's got the breeding, he's won over 2400 metres now and he could even run two miles down the track".

Shoot Out has now won five races from his eleven starts and has amassed more than 1.3 million dollars.

Seventh times a charm

One of Australia’s best mares is still without a Group 1 victory, but will look to break her drought this Saturday in the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.

‘Hot Danish’ is one of Sydney's favourite racehorses but a Group 1 victory has proved elusive so far from six previous attempts at the top level.

After what was a disappointing spring campaign in Melbourne, with the mare clearly not at her peak, Hot Danish was back to her best in the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes three weeks ago.

Trainer Les Bridge was confident as ever heading into that race, and is hopeful of the mare carrying her form into this Saturday.

"She seems to have come back as good as ever and I'm looking forward to Saturday and hopefully getting that Group One".

The forecast rain may prove to be the only thorn in her side, as her blistering turn of foot can be negated in heavier track conditions.

Jockey Tim Clark agrees, and is praying the rain stays away, so Australia can see the glamour mare at her best.

"A good to dead track would be my preferred surface with her, that will give her every possible chance".

Hot Danish is currently a $2.80 favourite for the TJ Smith, with Greg Eurell trained ‘Mic Mac’ on the second line of betting at $3.20.
